Merkel urges Egypt's Mursi to hold crisis dialogue

CAIRO/BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Egypt's Islamist president on Wednesday to open a dialogue with all political forces in the crisis-ridden Arab country after a week of violence that has killed more than 50 people.

President Mohamed Mursi flew to Germany to try to convince Europe of his democratic credentials, but in a sign of the political tensions back home, he restricted his trip to a few hours and canceled a planned Paris leg.

"One thing that is important for us is that the line for dialogue is always open to all political forces in Egypt, that the different political forces can make their contribution, that human rights are adhered to in Egypt and that of course religious freedom can be experienced," Merkel told Mursi at a joint news conference.

The Egyptian leader, who has faced months of protests by liberal and youth groups opposed to a new Islamic constitution, replied that dialogue was possible and that Egypt would be a state based on the rule of law, not run by the military.

But he refused to give a commitment sought by the opposition to form a national unity government, saying that would be for the new parliament to decide after elections expected in April.

Two more protesters were shot dead before dawn near Cairo's central Tahrir Square on the seventh day of what has become the deadliest wave of unrest since Mursi took power in June.

The army chief warned on Tuesday that the state was on the brink of collapse if Mursi's opponents and supporters did not end street battles that have marked the two-year anniversary of the revolt that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Mursi is due to return to Cairo later in the day.

Near Tahrir Square on Wednesday morning, dozens of protesters threw stones at police who fired back teargas, although the scuffles were brief.

"Our demand is simply that Mursi goes, and leaves the country alone. He is just like Mubarak and his crowd who are now in prison," said Ahmed Mustafa, 28, a youth who had goggles on his head to protect his eyes from teargas.

Opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei called for a meeting of the president, ministers, the ruling party and the opposition to halt the violence. But he also restated the opposition's precondition that Mursi first commit to seeking a national unity government.

Mursi's critics accuse him of betraying the spirit of the revolution by keeping too much power in his own hands and those of his Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist movement banned under Mubarak which won repeated elections since the 2011 uprising.

Mursi's supporters say the protesters want to overthrow Egypt's first democratically elected leader. The unrest has prevented a return to stability ahead of parliamentary elections due within months, and worsened an economic crisis that has seen the pound currency tumble in recent weeks.

The worst violence has been in the Suez Canal city of Port Said, where rage was fuelled by death sentences passed against soccer fans for deadly riots last year. Mursi responded by announcing on Sunday a month-long state of emergency and curfew in Port Said and two other Suez Canal cities.

Protesters have ignored the curfew and returned to the streets. Human Rights Watch called for Mursi to lift the decree.

Mursi was keen to allay the West's fears over the future of the most populous Arab country in his meetings with Merkel and powerful industry groups in Berlin.

"DISTURBING IMAGES"

"We have seen worrying images in recent days, images of violence and destruction, and I appeal to both sides to engage in dialogue," German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said in a radio interview on Wednesday ahead of Mursi's arrival.

Germany's "offer to help with Egypt's transformation clearly depends on it sticking to democratic reforms", he added.

Germany has praised Mursi's efforts in mediating a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinians in Gaza after a conflict last year, but became concerned at Mursi's efforts to expand his powers and fast-track a constitution last year.

Berlin was also alarmed by video that emerged in recent weeks showing Mursi making vitriolic remarks against Jews and Zionists in 2010 when he was a senior Brotherhood official. Germany's Nazi past and strong support of Israel make it highly sensitive to anti-Semitism.

Mursi's past anti-Jewish remarks were "unacceptable", Westerwelle said. "But at the same time President Mursi has played a very constructive role mediating in the Gaza conflict."

Asked about those remarks at the news conference with Merkel, Mursi said they had been taken out of context and he was not against the Jewish faith.

Egypt's main liberal and secularist bloc, the National Salvation Front, has so far refused talks with Mursi unless he promises a unity government including opposition figures.

"Stopping the violence is the priority, and starting a serious dialogue requires committing to guarantees demanded by the National Salvation Front, at the forefront of which are a national salvation government and a committee to amend the constitution," ElBaradei said on Twitter.

Those calls have also been backed by the hardline Islamist Nour party - rivals of Mursi's Brotherhood. Nour and the Front were due to meet on Wednesday, signaling an unlikely alliance of Mursi's critics from opposite ends of the political spectrum.

Brotherhood leader Mohamed El-Beltagy dismissed the unity government proposal as a ploy for the Front to take power despite having lost elections. On his Facebook page he ridiculed "the leaders of the Salvation Front, who seem to know more about the people's interests than the people themselves".

German industry leaders see potential in Egypt but are concerned about political instability.

"At the moment many firms are waiting on political developments and are cautious on any big investments," said Hans Heinrich Driftmann, head of Germany's Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Mursi's supporters blame the opposition for preventing an economic recovery by halting efforts to restore stability. The opposition says an inclusive government is needed to bring calm.

CIA nominee had knowledge of 'enhanced interrogation techniques'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - John Brennan, President Barack Obama's nominee to head the CIA, had detailed, contemporaneous knowledge of the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" on captured terrorism suspects during an earlier stint as a top spy agency official, according to multiple sources familiar with official records.

Those records, the sources said, show that Brennan was a regular recipient of CIA message traffic about controversial aspects of the agency's counter-terrorism program after September 2001, including the use of "waterboarding."

How deeply involved Brennan was in the program, and whether he vigorously objected to it at the time, as he has said he did, are likely to be central questions lawmakers raise at his Senate Intelligence Committee confirmation hearing, scheduled for February 7.

After Brennan temporarily left government service in 2005, he publicly disavowed waterboarding, a form of simulated drowning, and other physically painful techniques that are often described as torture.

The official records, which include raw CIA operational message traffic that remains classified, are silent on whether he opposed the techniques while at the spy agency, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Brennan served as deputy executive director of the agency beginning in 2001.

Some former officials familiar with deliberations about the program said they don't recall Brennan voicing objections to the use of harsh interrogation techniques.

But other former officials say Brennan was among agency officials who were uncomfortable with the use of physically coercive tactics, despite the legal opinions that supported their use. He expressed concern, according to these officials, that if details of the program became public, it would be CIA officers who would face criticism, rather than the politicians and lawyers who approved them.

"If John says he expressed reservations about some techniques, I believe him because he's an honest guy," said John McLaughlin, who was deputy CIA director at the time.

"Mr. Brennan had significant concerns and personal objections to many elements of the EIT (enhanced interrogation techniques) program while it was under way," a senior administration official said in response to Reuters' inquiries. "He voiced those objections privately with colleagues at the agency."

The question of whether and to what extent Brennan raised objections will be a focus of his confirmation hearing for Republican and Democratic senators alike.

"I have many questions and concerns about his nomination to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency, especially what role he played in the so-called enhanced interrogation programs while serving at the CIA during the last administration," Senator John McCain, who was tortured during captivity in North Vietnam, said recently.

KNOWLEDGE, BUT NOT RESPONSIBILITY

Under the CIA program, which largely ended before Obama took office, captured militants were detained and interrogated in a network of secret CIA prisons. Sometimes, they were delivered to foreign governments through an extralegal process called "extraordinary rendition."

Three high-ranking al Qaeda leaders, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001, were waterboarded.

Because he was a regular recipient of operational traffic related to the interrogation and detention program, Brennan's name appears in a secret draft of a 6,000-page Senate Intelligence Committee investigative report on the program, sources familiar with that report said. They added, however, that he was cited in passing, not as a significant supervisor or manager of the program.

Brennan, who is now Obama's White House counter-terrorism adviser, played no role in the program's "creation, execution or oversight," the senior Obama administration official said.

"(Brennan) was on hundreds if not thousands of messages a day regarding many different issues but his primary responsibility was ... helping manage the day-to-day running of the agency, to include support, logistics, IT, budget, personnel resources, facilities, IG (Inspector General) recommendations, and the like."

SECOND TRY FOR CIA

This is the second time that Obama has sought to nominate Brennan to head the spy agency, and the second time that questions have arisen about his involvement in enhanced interrogation tactics when he was a CIA official during the administration of former President George W. Bush.

Brennan's candidacy for the top CIA job was derailed over the issue when he was an early front-runner for it after Obama's 2008 election victory.

Brennan withdrew his name from consideration at that time and, in a letter to President-elect Obama, said he had been a "strong opponent" of Bush-era policies, including the Iraq war and coercive interrogation techniques.

Brennan instead became Obama's White House counter-terrorism adviser. Obama issued an executive order banning the techniques shortly after taking office.

Barring unexpected revelations, most political handicappers believe Brennan will be confirmed as CIA director this time.

'First Time' May Influence Sexual Satisfaction for Life | Psych Central ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on January 29, 2013

New research suggests a person?s first sexual experience can set the tone for the rest of one?s sexual life.

Matthew Shaffer, a doctoral student in psychology at the University of Tennessee, and C. Veronica Smith, Ph.D., an assistant psychology professor at the University of Mississippi, devised the research project to study the effects of losing one?s virginity.

The study is published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy and is the first to look at whether the circumstances of losing one?s virginity have lasting consequences.

?The loss of virginity is often viewed as an important milestone in human development, signifying a transition to adulthood,? said Shaffer.

?However, it has not been studied in this capacity. We wanted to see the influence it may have related to emotional and physical development.?

The researchers examined how first-time sexual satisfaction impacts long-term sexual function as well as how first-time physical and emotional responses affect long-term sexual experiences.

They found that positive first-time experiences were predictive of physical and emotional satisfaction. Specifically, those who felt loved and respected by their partner found later encounters more emotionally satisfying.

The researchers asked 331 young men and women about how they lost their virginity. The anonymous participants ranked the experience according to emotions related to anxiety, contentment and regret.

Survey responders also answered questions about their sex life using scales measuring sense of control, satisfaction and well-being. Finally, the participants filled out a diary for two weeks describing each sexual experience.

A series of analyses revealed those who were most emotionally and physically satisfied the first time found their sex lives the most fulfilling. Those who reported higher levels of anxiety and negativity with the first time reported lower overall sexual functioning.

?While this study doesn?t prove that a better first time makes for a better sex life in general, a person?s experience of losing their virginity may set the pattern for years to come,? said Shaffer.

Shaffer suggests that a first-time sexual experience may create a general pattern of thought and behavior that guides sexual experiences and understanding of information concerning sexuality.

The Wham Spot | Why You Need Auto Insurance

insurance St Clair Shores MI There are more cars hitting the road every year. With countless vehicles on the road, crashes can happen. The difference between a small aggravation and large obstacle can be car insurance. How can you determine what type of insurance you require and where you should go to buy it? Car crashes can lead to a variety of different expenses, which your car insurance can pay for based on the type of insurance you have purchased. Electing to drive without insurance could mean you have to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of all the damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: It pays for damages due to personal injury and damage to property that you are responsible for. Damages from bodily injury include medical fees, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Property damage includes car repair costs and loss of property use. It can also cover your legal fees if you are sued. Recommended, higher levels of liability insurance are available that cover more events than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for hospital bills and other medical treatment for you or other people in your car, no matter who was at fault in the crash. It is occasionally called no-fault coverage. The minimum amount of this insurance is typically set by local government. Medical Payments: This coverage can be purchased in states that are not considered no-fault; it pays regardless of who may have been at fault. If you purchase this type of coverage, you will receive coverage for all types of medical or funeral expenses. Collision: Damages that occur from a car accident will be covered under this type of car insurance. Comprehensive: This applies if your vehicle is stolen or damaged by something other than a collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured Motorist: Pays for repair and replacement costs when someone with insurance is in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a hit-and-run driver. Under-Insured Motorist: Similar to uninsured motorist protection, this type of insurance covers you from drivers without sufficient insurance protection. Emergency road service, car rental, and other varieties of coverage can also be purchased.

Forensic Astronomer Cracks the Case of Historic Meteor Procession

It was a cloudy winter night along the northeastern United States in February 1913, so most people might not have noticed anything unusual around 9 PM, but for a lucky few with clearer conditions ? and a penchant for staring up at the night sky ? there was a spectacular display of a series of fireballs moving from one end of the horizon to the other, following the same trajectory. It was a meteor procession ? an exceedingly rare event in which a meteor breaks up when it hits the Earth?s atmosphere. Normally, a meteor burns up as it plunges to Earth, but the fiery fragments in a procession travel in a nearly horizontal path running parallel to the surface of the Earth.

The meteor procession of February 9, 1913, captured newspaper headlines all over the northeast, and inspired a painting by Canadian astronomer Gustav Hahn. We?re approaching the 100th anniversary of that display, so it?s fitting that Donald Olson ? a self-described ?forensic astronomer? at Texas State University ? has a new article (co-authored by Steve Hutcheon of Australia?s Astronomical Association of Queensland)? in Sky and Telescope detailing his latest analysis of historical accounts describing the procession.

I?ve been a fan of Olson?s quirky research for years, and wrote about his findings several times for Discovery News. There was his intriguing hypothesis that the moon may have contributed to the sinking of the Titanic. He helped clear up confusion among historians as to the precise? location of Julius Caesar?s landing site when the Roman general invaded Britain in 55 B.C. He showed that Mary Shelley was probably telling the truth about a moonlit ?waking dream? that inspired her to pen Frankenstein. And he?s studied nagging astronomy-related issues in Chaucer?s Canterbury Tales, the photography of Ansel Adams, and Edvard Munch?s ?The Scream? (likely inspired by a blood-red sky at sunset, an after-effect of the 1883 eruption of Mount Krakatoa in Indonesia)

Depiction of the 1913 meteor procession by Canadian artist Gustav Hahn. Credit: University of Toronto Archives (A2008-0023), ? Natalie McMinn

Nor is this the first time Olson has tacked meteor procession. There was another such event in 1860, he discovered, one that likely inspired a classic poem by Walt Whitman, ?Year of Meteors?:

Nor the comet that came unannounced out of the north flaring in heaven,
Nor the strange huge meteor-procession dazzling and clear shooting
over our heads,
(A moment, a moment long it sail?d its balls of unearthly light over
our heads,
Then departed, dropt in the night, and was gone;)

Originally historians assumed that Whitman was referring to the 1833 or 1858 Leonid meteor storms, or a well-documented meteor that fell in 1959, but Olson suspected that there might be a record of a meteor procession in the historical record around the samr time. There was: he found several eyewitness accounts and newspaper reports of ?a spectacular procession of multiple fireballs? on July 20, 1860. It even inspired yet another artist, Frederic Church, ?The Meteor of 1860.? (Artists seem to like incorporating astronomical events into their paintings.)

Frederic Church's "The Meteor of 1860." Public domain.

Olson came across the Church painting and the Whitman mystery a few years after stumbling upon Hahn?s canvas (Hahn was an amateur astronomer) in an article by astronomer Clarence Chant, who evocatively described the ?slow, majestic motion of the bodies., and almost equally remarkable was the perfect formation which they retained.?

Hahn?s painting also? had an inscription: ?Meteor display of February 9, 1913, as seen near High Park.?He quickly recognized the similarities between the Hahn and Church scenes, and from there made the connection to the Whitman poem.

Which brings us to Olson?s latest work. William F. Denning penned an article about the 1913 procession in Nature in 1916, observing that its extended trajectory seemed unparalleled in astronomical history. Based on reports from ship navigators around the world, as well as other eyewitness accounts, it seemed to space more than 6000 miles. Later that year, in the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, he renewed his call for more navigational reports, since these were the best means of definitively confirming the range of the procession?s trajectory.

Olson and Hutcheon answered the call, albeit 100 years later. They combed through vast maritime archives and found seven new ship reports from that era. based on their subsequent analysis, they were able to extend the range of the 1913 procession?s trajectory by another 1000 miles. ?The track now goes more than 7000 miles ? that?s more than a quarter of the way around the world,? Olson said via press release. His new analysis is ?the most complete map ever drawn of the ground track of the procession.?

Farmers Insurance Open 2013 streaming: How to watch online ...

The PGA Tour will provide livestreaming of Monday afternoon's finish at Torrey Pines where Tiger Woods should claim his 75th career victory.

The 2013 Farmers Insurance Open will wrap up on Monday afternoon when most of the golf-watching public is at the office. CBS and the PGA Tour are set to provide a livestream of Monday's coverage, which will begin at 2:10 p.m. ET and should wrap up around 5:30 p.m. ET.

If you have access to a television, Golf Channel will provide coverage at the start of the round, beginning with their pregame show at 1:30 p.m. ET. They will then televise play from 2:10 to 4 p.m. ET, with CBS taking over at that point to broadcast the finish. CBS reportedly asked the Tour to start later on Monday, a decision that will cost several players the opportunity to qualify in Phoenix for the Waste Management Open.

Farmers Insurance Open 2013 purse: Tiger Woods bags $1.098 million with victory

The conclusion, of course, should involve a comfortable win for Tiger Woods, the game's biggest television draw. With 11 holes to play, Woods has a six-shot lead over the rest of the field. Given the way he's played this week on the South Course, that margin should only increase on Monday.

Here's a listing of the complete livestream options for Monday's finish.

Search efforts underway for fighter jet missing on training mission

ROME (Reuters) - A U.S. F-16 fighter jet may have crashed on Monday during a training exercise over the Adriatic Sea and the U.S. Air Force said the status of its Italy-based pilot was unknown.

Search efforts, aided by Italy's Coast Guard, were under way and the Air Force declined to offer many details.

It said only that it "lost contact" with the F-16 at about 8 p.m. local (2100 GMT) - language often used to describe a possible crash, although Air Force officials declined to speculate about the incident.

"The aircraft was performing a training mission over the Adriatic Sea with one person on board. The pilot's condition is unknown at this time," the Air Force said in a statement.

Italy's Coast Guard confirmed it was helping in the search-and-rescue effort.

A spokeswoman at Aviano Air Base in northern Italy said more information would released as it became available.

Should every nursing home have a full-time doctor? Projo | Rita ...

Filed Under Boomers and Elders, Providence Journal - Health | Leave a Comment

It?s time for Baby Boomers to turn nursing homes upside down. Many who are searching for places today for those they love use a checklist of questions to ask. It is important to learn about patient-staff ratio, cognitive exercises, music programs, physical activity, and general recreation. However, one of the most important questions seems almost too obvious to ask. ?Is there a doctor in the house?? In nursing homes, the answer is usually, ?No.? There are part-time physicians and consulting physicians, but the concept of full-time physicians has not yet become standard practice.

?

Jonathan M. Evans, M.D., M.P.H., is a geriatrician who teaches Aging and the Law at the University of Virginia School of Law. When it comes to physicians assigned to nursing homes, he said: ?The thing that matters most?is being there ? being there for patients when they?re sick; being there for families when they?re in need; being there for staff to provide support and ongoing education. You can?t be part of a team if you?re not present.?

?

It was in 2009 that Paul R. Katz, M.D., and colleagues at the University of Rochester wrote about the problem with nursing-home physicians in the Annals of Internal Medicine. They concluded: ?We contend that rather than accepting a diminished presence of physicians in nursing?homes and finding alternative care models, it is time to fully consider, appropriately fund, and test the nursing home specialist model.?

?

Yet today, directors of nursing homes both large and small are still expressing concern about the difficulty in finding physicians wishing to serve this population. There are even fewer psychiatrists available to prescribe appropriate medications. Dr. Evans pointed out the problems regarding the overuse of psychotropic medication in patients with dementia in his testimony before the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging, November 2011.

?

A big issue with part-time nursing-home physicians is that they often do not see the full picture. While they read charts and talk to staff, by not talking with families and caregivers they often glean an incomplete picture of patient needs.

?

At the Gerontological Society of America?s 65th Scientific Meetings this past fall, presentations from experts on caregiving, longevity, long-term care and optimal aging were particularly poignant. Baby Boomers, as the next generation of nursing-home or assisted-living residents, will demand change for the better.

?

Some families are taking action now by changing nursing homes that they feel are not in the best interest of a family member. However, other families may accept the status quo, even if they are dissatisfied, because they fear ?transfer trauma.?

?

Robert L. Kane, M.D., professor and chairman in the Long-term Care and Aging Department of the University of Minnesota, said that there has been a belief that nursing-home transfers are beleaguered with setbacks.

?

Author of ?The Good?Companion,? he explained: ?What we know about care in general is that change introduces an opportunity for bad things to happen. You counter this by preparation and engaging the resident in the decision as much as possible,? adding: ?We do know that humans are incredibly adaptable.?

?

Dr. Evans noted: ?We have built a health-care system that tends to focus more on providers and we need to change the model to focus on patients.? Previously at Mayo Clinic, he serves as chair of the Ethics Committee of the American Medical Directors? Association. In September he was named corporate medical director for the Life Care Centers in Tennessee.

?

?Rita??Watson,?MPH, is a Providence Journal columnist who wrote this through the MetLife Foundation Journalist in Aging Fellows program, a collaboration of New America Media and the Gerontological Society of America.

Five Sales Performance Metrics Key to Successful Business ...

Every metric has a story to tell. Dig in over a period of time, break apart all that goes into the metric calculation, join the dots and there you have your story. But then you also have to ACT ? your success depends on what you do after you figure out the story. What do you need to do more of? What do you need to eliminate? With the budget season in progress, metrics are on my mind (again). In this Accenture analysis of the?2012 Sales Performance Optimization Study, sponsored with CSO Insights, sales leaders say their top priorities for the past year was increasing sales effectiveness (56 percent), followed by increasing revenues (52 percent) and improving up-selling/cross-selling (39 percent). The Operations team can play a big role in increasing sales effectiveness with their clear understanding of the various moving parts and inner workings that contribute to high sales performance. These insights can help determine which levers (metrics) can actually help improve sales efforts and align the sales organization to the business strategy.

When it comes to sales metrics, one size definitely does not fit all. The key is to select a good mix of lagging and leading indicators ? a set that not only helps you to measure results but more importantly, gives you the ability to predict outcomes. Going beyond the standard booking or quota achievement vs. target, here are five other metrics that I believe go a long way in ensuring sales effectiveness:

Sales Performance Metric #1 ? Funnel or Opportunity Pipeline: In the current quarter, there is not much you can do to increase sales radically but you can still implement steps to make the sales grow for the rest of the year if you know where to focus efforts. This metric helps determine the nature of funnel and sales expected in future quarters/months. Organize and record each opportunity the sales team is prospecting and assign them a status such as ?qualified? or ?suspect? or ?proposal? along with an estimated value associated with each of them. Assign probability percentage to each status based on your past performance at each stage. The sales people can then prioritize their time according to the probability of a win (status) and the impact of a win (estimated value). This metric is a dynamic metric and will keep changing as new opportunities come in or old opportunities move out as delayed or lost. The value of sale multiplied by the status percentage gives estimated total sales that you can expect at any period in the future provided the opportunities and stages of each opportunity are diligently tracked and recorded.

Sales Performance Metric #2 ? Sales Mix: Based on the sales strategy of the year, one can come up with different mixes or ratios that need to be tracked as metrics for the year. This is essentially categorizing your funnel into different fields ? say by nature (new, renewals or farming), by market segment (products, services, maintenance), by demographics or geography (Americas, Europe, Rest of World), by channel (direct, indirect). The ratios are arrived at by dividing the mix value by total funnel value. This gives a view on how far your strategy is being implemented at the ground level or if there is a possibility of good returns on investment made in any particular area. The sales mix ratios help zoom in on decision areas and decision types and can change from time to time based on the granularity of information available. Again, here is where the operations team can play a big role in ensuring that data strategy, quality and integrity is maintained in all systems ? and garbage in-garbage out decision making is avoided.

Sales Performance Metric #3 ? Cost of Sales to Revenue Ratio: This is a metric that used wisely and measured as a trend over time can show the overall efficiency of the sales team and divided by segment, market or any other growth area that is in the strategy plan. The calculation should be based on the total costs for the selling efforts of each area of business. Total Sales Costs includes salaries, commissions and expenses for sales management, sales people and sales support. Divided by the revenue in the same period from the area of business, you can arrive at the ratio. I like this metric better than sales productivity (Revenue by number of sales people) as, in a global organization, salaries vary across regions, so does the revenues based on the nature of the business area. Measured over a period of time, it can give useful insights into where sales investments in terms of people is needed to get higher revenues, how long it takes for additional sales headcount to generate revenues and other such trends.

Sales Performance Metric #4 ? Conversion Rates and Ratios: Conversion rates are very useful in identifying sales methodology or process issues, including poor proposal preparation, inaccurate forecasting or funnel categorization efforts, insufficient research into customer buying behaviors, core strength and weakness of sales persons. Conversion rates need to be measured at various steps of the sales process ? the most common one is the win ratio ?what percentage of qualified opportunities get closed as won. Other useful rates could be the percentage of deals that get lost after responding to proposals, percentage of qualified opportunities that show no movement over a long period of time, percentage of opportunities that are lost without any reason for loss ? to pin point where the improvement is needed in the process and useful in the qualification and prioritization of opportunities.

Sales Performance Metric #5 ? Gross Margin % by Sales Person: This metric is a bit controversial as it is not generally used to measure performance of the sales team nor used in sales incentive plans. The general idea is that sales team is responsible for getting in the bookings and revenue and the rest of the organization has to ensure that margins are made. I am of the view that unless we track and reward sales people based on not only the volume of the bookings but also the quality of bookings, the organization cannot achieve its margin mandate. Discounting practices, pricing, ?value? selling, terms and conditions on scope, timelines, milestones all affect gross margins and sales team has the highest influence with the customer to ensure favourable terms in these areas. So why not measure not only the actual gross margins of revenue by sales person but also future margins based on the funnel details? This will help the entire organization to plan and also help the sales teams to make the ?right? (read profitable) sales.

?Gut feel? is all good but you also need the right data and indicators to validate your gut feel. On the other hand, no sales leader will want to go overboard on metrics and measurements that put additional load on the bandwidth of their teams taking time away from ?selling? to filling in all sorts of data requirements. So, it is important to choose the right set and number of metrics to help focus strategy and efforts based on not only past performance but also through a rationalized view into the future to enable course corrections as necessary for the success of the business before it is too late.

So what is your story? What metrics do you think are must have leading indicators to improve forecasting accuracy? What are some of the more creative sales metrics that you have seen ? I would love to hear back and learn from you.

Apogee One for iOS and Mac (hands-on)

Apogee One for iOS and Mac handson

Apogee strolled into NAMM with a trio of wares newly outfitted for both iOS and Mac. While the Duet and Quartet are certainly formidable pieces of recording kit, the more compact Apogee One caught our eye for its dual capture ability without adding too much heft to the ol' backpack. The unit accepts input from a built-in mic and either a XLR or 1/4-inch analog input -- both of which connect via a two-headed Y-cable. From there, the One connects to a power supply and either your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Apple computer of choice for that dual-tracking capture. After seeing the device up close and spending a few minutes handling it, our main gripe remains the lack of a Lightning connection. Sure it's great that we can outfit our iDevices, but we'd love to see an included cable for the latest port to come out of Cupertino rather having to locate an adapter.

Without being able to capture a solid vocal track on the bustling show floor here at NAMM, we unfortunately can't speak to the quality of that on-board condenser microphone. However, the One seemed to handle guitar licks quite well when recorded with GarageBand on an iPad mini. As we've mentioned before, the outfit has also outed its Maestro app for low-latency monitoring and a bit more control over how matters progress. Aside from all of that, the gadget sports a similar dial knob to that of the original release for selecting functions and controlling input / output levels with dual LED stacks for a visual indicator of said signals. The One wields the same solid build quality that we've come to expect from Apogee based on a few of the other products we've spent extended time with. For a quick walkthrough, take a look at the video that lies beyond the break.

Update: Apogee has passed along the info via the comments below that a Lightning cable is on the way in Q2 and that users shouldn't experience any difference in performance with the adapter that they'll need in the meantime.

Azarenka wins back-to-back Australian titles

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Victoria Azarenka won her second consecutive Australian Open title, beating Li Na 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a dramatic final that contained a break for fireworks, two medical timeouts and a nasty fall to the court by Li.

The Chinese star first tumbled to the court after twisting her left ankle in the fifth game of the second set and had it taped.

On the first point after a 10-minute pause in the third set while fireworks boomed overhead from nearby Australia Day celebrations, Li fell over again and slammed the back of her head on the court. The 2011 French Open champion was treated and had another timeout before being allowed to resume the match.

Azarenka, who broke down in tears and sobbed into her towel when the match ended, won five of the next six games to claim her second major title and retain the No. 1 ranking.

"Unfortunately, you have to go through some rough patches to achieve great things. That's what makes it so special for me," she said. "I went through that, and I'm still able to kiss that beautiful trophy."

Serena Williams, who lost in the quarterfinals, will become the new No. 2 in the rankings.

The 2-hour, 40-minute match featured 16 service breaks, with Li losing her service nine times.

On a crisp Saturday night, Azarenka won the coin toss and elected to receive, a ploy that seemed to work when a nervous Li was broken to start the match. After a double fault on the first point, Li's forehand long gave Azarenka the early lead.

When she first injured her ankle, Li was trailing 3-1 in the second set. When she came back, she won three of the next four games to tie it 4-4, but Azarenka broke back and then held her serve.

Azarenka broke in the opening game of the final set, just two games before the match was suspended for the fireworks, a planned stoppage of play that both players were notified about before the match.

While Azarenka jogged around and practiced her serving motion during the 10-minute fireworks break, Li sat on her courtside chair for most of the stoppage.

It was on the first point that she again fell to the court.

Li said she went "totally black" for two seconds after her head hit the court, and when a medical official asked her to follow her finger, "I started laughing, thinking 'This is a tennis court, not like a hospital.'"

Li said the tournament doctor saw her after the match and checked out her head and neck.

"I should be OK,' Li said.

From the outset, the capacity crowd at Rod Laver Arena was firmly behind Li, cheering loudly when she was introduced. Meanwhile, Azarenka's errors were applauded, and one spectator even mocked the loud hooting sound she makes when she hits a shot.

The chill from the crowd was a remnant of Azarenka's semifinal win over American teenager Sloane Stephens, when Azarenka was criticized for taking a questionable 10-minute medical timeout near the end of the match. She was accused of taking the time out to compose herself after she'd wasted five match points while serving for the match against Stephens. Azarenka said she needed the time out because a rib injury was making it difficult for her to breathe and she had a knee injury.

In the second set Saturday, a few fans heckled Azarenka. One man yelled, "Take a deep breath, Vicky."

By the end of the match, she appeared to have won some of the fans back. Azarenka's friend, rapper Redfoo, yelled down to her from the player box "You deserve it," and she later blew kisses to the crowd. Someone else in the crowd shouted "Victoria, we love you."

Azarekna appeared to quickly forgive the crowd, saying during the trophy presentations that she wanted to thank the fans for their support.

"I will always keep very special memories of this court and it will be in my heart forever," she said, pausing several times to find the right words. "Of course, I (almost) forgot to say congratulations to Li Na, she's had a terrific start to the year ... hope to see you in many, many more finals."

Azarenka and Li had met twice before in Grand Slam tournaments, with Li winning both times ? in the fourth round of the 2011 Australian Open and quarterfinals at the French Open. Li lost the 2011 Australian Open final to Kim Clijsters but won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros a few months later, beating Francesca Schiavone.

But after failing to advance past the fourth round at any major in 2012, Li hired Carlos Rodriguez, Justine Henin's former coach. The hard training he's put her through in the past four months appears to be paying dividends.

Li won a WTA tournament in China before travelling to Australia, where she advanced to the semifinals at the Sydney International.

In the men's final on Sunday, Novak Djokovic will attempt to win his third consecutive Australian Open against U.S. Open champion Andy Murray. Djokovic has had the benefit of an extra day off after an easy three-set win over David Ferrer on Thursday night, while Murray needed a tough five-setter to defeat Roger Federer.

Murray has predicted a tough match with long rallies against Djokovic, the player he beat in the final at Flushing Meadows in September.

"I'm ready for the pain," he said. "I hope it's a painful match, that will mean it will be a good one."

In the other final Sunday to end the year's first Grand Slam, the unseeded pairs of Jarmila Gajdosova and Matthew Ebden of Australia and the Czech Republic's Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak play for the mixed doubles championship.

Dung beetles look to the stars

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A species of South African dung beetle has been shown to use the Milky Way to navigate, making it the only known animal that turns to the galactic spray of stars across the night sky for direction.

Researchers have known for several years that the inch-long insects use the sun or moon as fixed points to ensure they keep rolling dung balls in a straight line - the quickest way of getting away from other beetles at the dung heap.

But scientists have puzzled over how the beetles, which perform an orientation dance on top of their dung balls before setting off, achieve a straight line on moonless nights.

To prove the Milky Way theory, scientists at Johannesburg's Wits University took beetles into the university planetarium to see how they fared with a normal night sky, and then one devoid of the Milky Way.

"The dung beetles don't care which direction they're going in. They just need to get away from the bun fight at the poo pile," Wits professor Marcus Byrne said. "But when we turned off the Milky Way, the beetles got lost."

And on cloudy nights without a moon or stars?

"They probably just stay at home," Byrne said.

Addabbo bill would give Sandy victims tax relief | Queens Campaigner

Posted on January 25, 2013 by Steve Mosco in District 15, State Senate

A state Senate bill seeks to ease property taxes for Hurricane Sandy victims.

A newly formed bipartisan task force is taking aim at Hurricane Sandy?s collateral damage as it looks to give property owners a tax break.

State Sen. Joe Addabbo (D-Howard Beach), a member of the task force, is co-sponsoring new legislation that would provide relief from property taxes for city homeowners whose properties were badly damaged by the October storm.

The bill, known as the New York City Hurricane Sandy Assessment Relief Act, would assist homeowners whose properties, as a result of damage from the storm, lost 50 percent or more of their assessed value. Property tax relief would be provided to homeowners based on the amount of damage sustained by their properties during Hurricane Sandy, and people whose homes lost all of their value as a result of the storm would not be assessed any property taxes at all.

?Property owners who are trying their best to put their lives and homes back together after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy should not have to worry about paying full property tax bills on houses that are horribly damaged, or in some cases, no longer exist,? said Addabbo. ?Tax bills are based on the assessed value of the property, and if the property is in shambles and has lost most or all of its value, the tax burden must be reduced accordingly or eliminated. These people have already lost so much, they don?t need this additional financial and emotional burden.?

Addabbo said the percentage of loss in assessed value of the properties would be determined by the city Department of Finance, whose findings could be reviewed by the city Tax Commission if requested by the property owner. Homeowners seeking the assessment relief would need to submit a written request to the Finance Department for consideration within 90 days of the legislation being approved and signed into law by the governor.

The bill is now under consideration by the Senate Committee on Cities. In the state Assembly, the legislation is being reviewed by the Committee on Real Property Taxation.

Addabbo noted that he continues to be involved in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, both in his district ? which was especially devastated by the storm ? and in the state Legislature.

?This tax relief legislation seeks to address just one aspect of the many issues that have arisen in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and I know we will be taking action to remedy other concerns and problems related to the aftermath of the storm,? he said. ?I hope that this bill, which would ease a financial burden on homeowners who are already suffering so many heartbreaking hardships, will get the legislative attention it deserves.?
