Westbrook grandma completes 33-mile swim in Japan

WESTBROOK, Maine ?

A Maine woman has successfully battled jellyfish and weariness to become the oldest person to swim the Tsugaru Strait in Japan.

Pat Gallant-Charette,? 61, finished the 33-mile swim in 19 hours and 36 minutes in? the middle of the night Friday in Japan. Her daughter posted online that Gallant-Charette suffered more than 100 jellyfish stings and even had small fish nibbling at her fingertips.

Family and friends got the word Thursday afternoon.

The Tsugaru Strait between Japan's main island and a northern island is a busy international shipping channel that connects the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.

The Portland Press Herald says the grandma from Westbrook is on a quest to complete the Oceans Seven Challenge, seven long-distance, open-water swims around the globe.
