Women 'making alternative retirement plans'

Older women all over the country may need to look into ways to improve their financial situation after it was noted many females are facing a shortfall in money as they enter their retirement.

According to Anne Shaw, editor of CashQuestions.com, it is looking "grim" for many women in the UK who are going to have a lot less money in their retirement than expected.

Career break

She explained women are likely to be affected more than men as they may not have had the chance to build up as large a pension pot, due to the fact they may have taken time out from their careers to have children and to focus on bringing up their family.

"It is hoped that the state pension reforms will do something to help with this. But obviously those are very small compared with most people's needs," said Ms Shaw.

The changes will also come too late for some people, who will find they have a lot less money to live on once they have given up work than they had expected to earlier in their lives.

Equity release

Individuals in this position could be set to look into products such as equity release plans to see if they are able to unlock money from the value of their homes which can be used to secure their financial future and make sure they are going to be comfortable in their retirement.

Ms Shaw suggested downsizing is going to become an increasingly popular option among women approaching their retirement, but this is not necessarily a suitable or appealing choice for a lot of females.

Moving home can be a stressful and worrying time and a lot of people will prefer to remain in their own property for as long as they are able to.

Equity Release Council director-general Andrea Rozario recently stated in an article for Lovemoney how downsizing is not an option for many older people, due to the fact that there is an emotional impact of moving to another house later in life.

Sony goes Redhunting with PMWF55 and PMWF5 pro CineAlta 4K Super 35mm sensor camcorders

Having seen some of its high-end cinema camera thunder stolen by the likes of Red and Arri, Sony has just launched a pair of CineAlta PL-mount cameras with brand new Super 35mm sensors: The PMW-F5 and PMW-F55. Though both pack 4K CMOS imagers, there are some major differences -- the higher-end PMW-F55 has a global shutter, wider color gamut and can capture 4k, 2k or HD video internally, while the PMW-F5 records 2k and HD natively with a rolling shutter (4k requires an optional RAW recorder, below).

Depending on the level of quality you want, there are several ways to capture video to each camcorder. MPEG-4 H.264 video or Sony's SR MPEG-4 SStP can be recorded onto Sony's new SxS PRO+ media, or if RAW quality is desired, there's the new AXS-R5 Access Memory System for 2K / 4K RAW capture -- which will also work with the current NEX-FS700. Using the latter system, the PMW-F5 is capable of grabbing up to 120fps slow motion RAW HD video, while the PMW-F55 can capture 240fps at 2k, putting it squarely in Epic-X territory. The new camcorders will arrive in February 2013, and while Sony hasn't outed pricing yet, it'll likely be well under the flagship 4k CineAlta F65's formidable $65k sticker. Check the PR after the break to get the entire technical skinny.

Legal Complaint Filed Over Chau Campaign Mailer - Arcadia, CA ...

The wife of 49th Assembly District candidate Dr. Matthew Lin has filed a legal complaint against Ed Chau's campaign for distributing campaign mailers displaying her full name, home address and social security number.

The four mailers released Oct. 18 featured copies of out-of-date tax liens alongside claims Joy and Matthew Lin neglected to pay county and state taxes. The mailers also had aerial photos of the couple's home, describing it as a "San Marino mansion with tennis courts and a pool."

According to the 9-page complaint filed Friday with the Los Angeles Superior Court, one of the tax liens featured on the flyer displayed only Joy Lin's name and social security number, with "nothing on the face of that document showing any connection Dr. (Matthew) Lin."

Also, the liens in questions were erroneous and had been released several years ago.?

By distributing the flyers, the Chau campaign had "invaded? (Joy Lin's) right to privacy as to her personal and financial affairs and as to her social security number," the complaint read. Furthermore, "These flyers and their contents placed (Joy Lin) in a false light in the eyes of the public which is objectionable to a reasonable person."

The Chau campaign reportedly ignored repeated requests from Lin's legal team to stop disseminating the flyers.

"I personally knew that when I decided to run for office, it would be difficult on our family and that there would be misleading information about me, but never did I foresee having my opponent, attack my wife personally and potentially subject her to identify theft and credit fraud,? Matthew Lin said a media statement.? ?My name is on the ballot and I am the one running for office, not my wife, the actions taken by Ed Chau seem low, even for a trial lawyer.?

Patch is awaiting a response from Chau's campaign.

Kate Moss' Vanity Fair Interview - Business Insider

An image from Kate Moss' Obsession fragrance campaign in 1993. She was 19.

Kate Moss led the "heroin chic" movement of the 1990's when she was just a teenager. She's notoriously private and rarely gives interviews.?

But now, Moss has opened up to Vanity Fair about how stressful it was to be modeling at a young age.?

Her iconic Calvin Klein photoshoot with Mark Wahlberg gave her a "nervous breakdown," Moss said. She was 17 or 18 and had to straddle the actor for the photoshoot.

"It didn't feel like me at all," Moss told Vanity Fair. "I couldn't get out of bed for two weeks."

Moss also discussed the first nude photoshoot she did at age 16.?

She told the magazine:?

"I see a 16-year-old now, and to ask her to take her clothes off would feel really weird. But they were like, If you don?t do it, then we?re not going to book you again. So I?d lock myself in the toilet and cry and then come out and do it. I never felt very comfortable about it. There?s a lot of boobs. I hated my boobs! Because I was flat-chested. And I had a big mole on one. That picture of me running down the beach?I?ll never forget doing that, because I made the hairdresser, who was the only man on the shoot, turn his back.?

Moss also says she spent years crying after her relationship with actor Johnny Depp ended.?

While the industry has recently taken steps to limit the use of underage models, Moss gives insight into the psychological affects modeling has on teens.?

Pakistani Autumn Feast at Vegetarian Cookery School ? post by ...

Recently I taught a wonderful Pakistani Autumn vegetarian cookery class at the incredibily inspiring cookery school run one of my personal food heroes, ?Rachel Demuth?(of Demuths Restaurent, Bath)?, at ?the Vegetratian Cookery School in Bath ? I have taught at many venues, attended many cookery classes at different schools, but there is something about this school. The energy, the location, the town ? and Rachel herself. Her passion and commitment is evident from your first meeting with her. I was honoured to be her guest for the night at her lovely home, before the class where we shared a drink and some lovely food made by Christopher and fantastically inspiring foodie conversation ? To teach at this school is even a bigger honour. Here is a post written by Christopher Robbins for the Vegetarian Cookery School, Bath. He attended the course and was a fantastic student to teach.I was here on a mission to prove that Pakistani food has much to offer in terms of vegetarian cuisine, it?s simple, light, fragrant and so different from any other cuisine in the Indian sub-contiment, ?Here is Christopher?s post for the VCS.

?

Sumayya Jamil, best known as?Pukka Paki,?taught a fascinating Masterclass at?The Vegetarian Cookery School. Christopher Robbins took the class and shares his review of the day, along with a couple of recipes, courtesy of Sumayya.

Sumayya was brought up in Karachi in Pakistan and is a natural cook, trained by generations of mothers, as she says:

?I grew up in a family where all the women from my paternal grandmother (Dadi jan), my maternal gran (Nani Mummy) and most of all my mom made traditional family recipes with deep historical roots and most of all they all reinvented and invented recipes every time they were in the kitchen. We all cooked by estimation ?andaza? in my family that the best food is cooked that way in the sub-continent especially. Cooking is all about senses and ?andaza? is the 6th sense of cooking!?

Borders between countries are interesting phenomena. Given that most are arbitrary for the enclosed cultures and ethnic groups, it is remarkable how often they also enclose distinctly different cuisines from those of neighbouring countries. Pakistani food and cooking is a delicious and surprising case.

Pakistan was most recently separated from its south-eastern neighbour, India, in 1947. But it has older borders with Afghanistan, Iran, and China and right across its northern neighbours ran ancient trade routes between China to the east and Turkey and Arabian states to the west.

In the UK, despite a long history of immigration from both India and Pakistan, and the resulting plethora of unremarkable and usually unmemorable ?takeaways? lining every town and village high street, no obvious distinction between the cuisines of either country guides the ?take-away? customer. These ?takeaways? are the second most popular choice after the recently ascendant burger, yet the regular and repeated purchase remains one of habit and convenience and not of understanding or discrimination among flavours.

The Vegetarian Cookery School has several Indian cookery courses in its repertoire. In September, Urvashi gaves us a wonderful insight into?Gujerati Cooking.?Sumayya?s class was the first Pakistani food course and what a revelation.

Sumayya explained the marked differences between the two countries? cuisines. Pakistan is absolutely to the north-west of India and to the southern edge of the ancient trade routes from Mongolia through China, Afghanistan into the Arabian states and across into Turkey. Trade was never far from wars and both these disruptions have left their influence on Pakistani food.

For example, the Mongol influence on food was simple flavours, but heavenly saffron and, unlike the many regional cuisines of India, very little use of chilli. From the West, the Turkish traces are of pistachio nuts and much richer food flavours, which meant more and greater quantities of spices in cooking. Meat was eaten in greater quantities, especially barbecued which came from the Arabian neighbours.

Despite the preponderance of ?tandoori? dishes in Indian restaurants in the UK, the tandoor oven originated in Pakistan, along the Indus valley, probably as early as the Bronze age. It remains a defining characteristic of traditional Pakistani cooking.

Pakistani food is thought to be dominated by meat. This is true, but traditional cooking also boasts plenty of vegetable dishes which rely on the freshest of vegetables, especially in the South. Fenugreek leaves (methi) are popular, though little fenugreek seeds appear in the cooking. Green chillies appear, but are much milder than in India, and are used principally for the ?crunchy? texture rather than ?heat?.

More significant differences are found in the richer flavours of Pakistani food. Top spices are cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and star anise. All are used with a delicious heavy hand. Ginger and garlic are featured in most savoury recipes, and the carbohydrate staples are rice (basmati) and breads (usually cooked in a tandoor oven). And, I mustn?t forget one of Sumayya?s own favourites, dried rose petals, the most aromatic kind, not anything like those from the petrol station forecourt!

Sumayya described the essence or skill in cooking Pakistani food as being able to ?balance? the four tastes: heat, spice, sour, and sweet. I was struck too with the light touch on the cooking oil. All her food was light and delightfully devoid of the greasy mouth-feel too often associated with Pakistani and Indian food.

Her feast menu (see below) started with two contrasting street foods; A?Channa Boondi Chaat (Chickpea and fried chickpea flour ?drops? with potatoes, pomegranate seeds, yoghurt, coriander leaf, mint and tamarind; and a sweet samosa filled with ripe (and I mean RIPE) banana, coconut, cardamom and jaggery.

?

The samosas were wrapped in filo pastry, which kept them light, and were drizzled with chilli chocolate.

?

It was interesting that Sumayya gave most attention to the simplest item in the recipes ? rice. (The same reverence and detail was heaped on the rice in?Simi Rezai?s Persian Cookery Course?earlier in the summer.). Rice was both a valuable ingredient and had to be cooked just so or the cooks reputation suffered. Basmati rice was standard and the best quality available. Sumayya?s method (there must be as many methods as there are rice grains in a kilo of best basmati) was prefaced with a note of solemnity and of precision. Rice is soaked for 30 minutes in water to wash off any external starch powder as well as as grit. The rice is drained in a colander while the water to cook it in is boiled. The rice is tipped into a saucepan and covered with the boiling water as the heat is turned on to bring the rice to a boil.

?

For the?Shahi Green Vegetable Biryani, Sumayya said the rice was cooked until it was firm, but not fully cooked as it is layered alternately with the vegetables, sealed in the saucepan with a tight fitting lid and a layer of foil, then left on a very low hear for 20 minutes to finish cooking and to blend the aromas from the spices.

This biryani was an eye-opener. I think. Many biryani dishes in restaurants tend to have rather oily rice. This recipe uses rather less oil (oil plus ghee) for the amount of rice, then it is dispersed around a significant weight of vegetables which leaves the whole dish showing a light and oil-free rice component. It is also a very useful vegetable dish, as this ?whole meal in one saucepan? concept is most often used for meat dishes and a vegetable biryani is uncommon?..but delicious.

?

Two dishes on the day that impressed everyone were the?Beetroot, Jaggery and Cumin Raita?(which combined the ethereal blend of raw beetroot, roasted cumin, coriander, green chilli, fresh mint, jaggery, and whipped thick yoghurt) and a rather British sounding?Shahi Tukra, or Mughal style bread and butter pudding. The latter turned the usually rather bland British pudding into something both exotic and simultaneously British. That was a remarkable feat, as desserts don?t feature at the end of a Pakistani meal.

The magnificent?Shahi tukra?comprises triangles of thick-sliced white bread that is fried golden in ghee then soaked in sugar syrup, arranged in a shallow dish and covered with a thick ricotta-based milk-custard flavoured with saffron and crushed cardamom. This aromatic temptation was decorated with crushed almonds and pistachios scattered over the top.

If only the Mughal influenced continued westward after infusing with the Ottoman empire, just think how exciting British rice pudding, trifle and apple Charlotte might be today??.

Migraines May Affect Children's School Performance, Study Suggests

NEW YORK, Oct 30 (Scott DiSavino) - Hurricane Sandy slowed or shut a half-dozen U.S. nuclear power plants, while the nation's oldest facility declared a rare "alert" after the record storm surge pushed flood waters high enough to endanger a key cooling system.

Exelon Corp's 43-year-old New Jersey Oyster Creek plant remains on "alert" status, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said early Tuesday. It is only the third time this year that the second-lowest of four emergency action levels was triggered.

The alert came after water levels at the plant rose by more than 6.5 feet (2 meters) above normal, potentially affecting the "water intake structure" that pumps cooling water through the plant, an NRC spokesman said.

Those pumps are not essential since the reactor has been shut for planned refuelling since Oct. 22. However, a further rise to 7 feet could submerge the service water pump motor that is used to cool the water in the spent fuel pool, potentially forcing it to use emergency water supplies from the in-house fire suppression system to keep the rods from overheating.

On Tuesday, an NRC spokesman said the levels reached a peak of 7.4 feet -- apparently above the threshold. As of 6:10 a.m. EDT waters were at 6.5 feet, with the next high tide at 11:45 a.m. He said the company had moved a portable pump to the water intake structure as a precaution, but has not needed to use it.

Exelon said in a statement that there was no danger to equipment and no threat to public health or safety.

"Right now there's no imminent threat of releases. There's no protective actions around the plant," Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate said on the Today Show.

"Some of these reporting requirements are due though to the severity

of the storms. That they have to make these notifications based upon

conditions, that does not mean that they are in an imminent threat at

the plant," Fugate said.

The incident at Oyster Creek, which is about 60 miles (95 km) east of

Philadelphia on the New Jersey Coast, came as Sandy made landfall as

the largest Atlantic storm ever, bringing up to 90 mile per hour (mph)

winds and 13-foot storm surges in the biggest test of the industry's

emergency preparedness since the Fukushima disaster in Japan a year

and a half ago.

Despite the alert -- which is a serious but not catastrophic event

that signals a "potential substantial degradation in the level of

safety" -- the U.S. nuclear industry was broadly seen having passed

the test. About a dozen alerts have been issued in the past four

years, according to NRC press releases.

On Tuesday morning, the NRC said that Entergy Corp's Indian Point 3

automatically tripped offline at about 10:41 p.m. last night due to

fluctuations in the power grid caused by the storm, while Public

Service Enterprise Group Inc's Salem Unit 1 was manually shut down at

1:10 a.m. due to a loss of "condenser circulators" due to the storm

surge and debris.

SPENT FUEL

The relatively small 636-megawatt (MW) Oyster Creek plant earlier

experienced a "power disruption" at its switch yard, causing two

backup diesel generators to kick in and maintain a stable source of

power, Exelon said.

The NRC spokesman said the company could use water from a fire

suppression system to cool the pool if necessary. The used uranium

rods in the pool could cause the water to boil in about 25 hours

without additional coolant; in an extreme scenario the rods could

overheat, risking the eventual release of radiation.

The concerns over the status of the spent fuel pool at Oyster Creek

was reminiscent of the fears that followed the Fukushima disaster last

year, when helicopters and fire hoses were enlisted to ensure the

pools remained filled with fresh, cool water. The nuclear industry has

said that the spent fuel rods at Fukushima were never exposed to the

air.

Nuclear plants must store the spent uranium fuel rods for at least

five years in order to cool them sufficiently before they can be moved

to dry cask storage containers.

Exelon spokesman David Tillman said Monday night the plant has

"multiple and redundant" sources of cooling for the spent fuel pool.

He said he did not know whether the service water system was

operational last night.

The plant uses pumps to take in external water that circulates through

a heat exchanger used to cool the internal water that surrounds the

rods, keeping them from overheating.

Among other units, Constellation Energy Nuclear Group's 630-MW Nine

Mile Point 1 nuclear power reactor in upstate New York did shut due to

a problem putting power onto the grid, although it was not clear

whether the trouble was related to the storm.

In addition, Sandy caused power reductions at both units at Exelon's

Limerick nuclear plant in Pennsylvania and one unit at Dominion's

Millstone plant in Connecticut.

Facebook used to kidnap, traffic Indonesian girls

20 hrs.

When a 14-year-old girl received a Facebook friend request from an older man she didn't know, she accepted it out of curiosity. It's a click she will forever regret, leading to a brutal story that has repeated itself as sexual predators find new ways to exploit Indonesia's growing obsession with social media.

The junior high student was quickly smitten by the man's smooth online flattery. They exchanged phone numbers, and his attention increased with rapid-fire texts. He convinced her to meet in a mall, and she found him just as charming in person.

They agreed to meet again. After telling her mom she was going to visit a sick girlfriend on her way to church choir practice, she climbed into the man's minivan near her home in Depok, on the outskirts of Jakarta.

The man, a 24-year-old who called himself Yogi, drove her an hour to the town of Bogor, West Java, she told The Associated Press in an interview.

There, he locked her in a small room inside a house with at least five other girls aged 14 to 17. She was drugged and raped repeatedly ? losing her virginity in the first attack.

After one week of torture, her captor told her she was being sold and shipped to the faraway island of Batam, known for its seedy brothels and child sex tourism that caters to men coming by boat from nearby Singapore.

She sobbed hysterically and begged to go home. She was beaten and told to shut up or die.

So far this year, 27 of the 129 children reported missing to Indonesia's National Commission for Child Protection are believed to have been abducted after meeting their captors on Facebook, said the group's chairman, Arist Merdeka Sirait. One of the 27 has been found dead.

In the month since the Depok girl was found near a bus terminal Sept. 30, there have been at least seven reports of young girls in Indonesia being abducted by people they met on Facebook. Although no solid data exists, police and aid groups that work on trafficking issues say it seems to be a particularly big problem in the Southeast Asian archipelago.

"Maybe Indonesia is kind of a unique country so far. Once the reports start coming in, you will know that maybe it's not one of the countries, maybe it's one of a hundred countries," said Anjan Bose, a program officer who works on child online protection issues at ECPAT International, a nonprofit global network that helps children in 70 countries. "The Internet is such a global medium. It doesn't differentiate between poor and rich. It doesn't differentiate between the economy of the country or the culture."

Websites that track social media say Indonesia has nearly 50 million people signed up for Facebook, making it one of the world's top users after the U.S. The capital, Jakarta, was recently named the most active Twitter city by Paris-based social media monitoring company Semiocast. In addition, networking groups such as BlackBerry and Yahoo Messenger are wildly popular on mobile phones.

Many young Indonesians, and their parents, are unaware of the dangers of allowing strangers to see their personal information online. Teenagers frequently post photos and personal details such as their home address, phone number, school and hangouts without using any privacy settings ? allowing anyone trolling the net to find them and learn everything about them.

"We are racing against time, and the technology frenzy over Facebook is a trend among teenagers here," Sirait said. "Police should move faster, or many more girls will become victims."

The 27 Facebook-related abductions reported to the commission this year in Indonesia have already exceed 18 similar cases it received in all of 2011. Overall, the National Task Force Against Human Trafficking said 435 children were trafficked last year, mostly for sexual exploitation.

Many who fight child sex crimes in Indonesia believe the real numbers are much higher. Missing children are often not reported to authorities. Stigma and shame surround sexual abuse in the world's largest Muslim-majority country, and there's a widespread belief that police will do nothing to help.

An ECPAT International report estimates that each year, 40,000 to 70,000 children are involved in trafficking, pornography or prostitution in Indonesia, a nation of 240 million where many families remain impoverished.

The U.S. State Department has also warned that more Indonesian girls are being recruited using social media networks. In a report last year, it said traffickers have "resorted to outright kidnapping of girls and young women for sex trafficking within the country and abroad."

Online child sexual abuse and exploitation are common in much of Asia. In the Philippines, kids are being forced to strip or perform sex acts on live webcams ? often by their parents, who are using them as a source of income. Western men typically pay to use the sites.

"In the Philippines, this is the tip of the iceberg. It's not only Facebook and social media, but it's also through text messages ... especially young, vulnerable people are being targeted," said Leonarda Kling, regional representative for Terre des Hommes Netherlands, a nonprofit working on trafficking issues. "It's all about promises. Better jobs or maybe even a nice telephone or whatever. Young people now, you see all the glamour and glitter around you and they want to have the latest BlackBerry, the latest fashion, and it's also a way to get these things."

Facebook says its investigators regularly review content on the site and work with authorities, including Interpol, to combat illegal activity. It also has employees around the world tasked with cracking down on people who attempt to use the site for human trafficking.

"We take human trafficking very seriously and, while this behavior is not common on Facebook, a number of measures are in place to counter this activity," spokesman Andrew Noyes said in an email.

He declined to give any details on Facebook's involvement in trafficking cases reported in Indonesia or elsewhere.

The Depok girl, wearing a mask to hide her face as she was interviewed, said she is still shocked that the man she knew for nearly a month turned on her.

"He wanted to buy new clothes for me, and help with school payments. He was different ... that's all," she said. "I have a lot of contacts through Facebook, and I've also exchanged phone numbers. But everything has always gone fine. We were just friends."

She said that after being kidnapped, she was given sleeping pills and was "mostly unconscious" for her ordeal. She said she could not escape because a man and another girl stood guard over her.

The girl said the man did not have the money for a plane ticket to Batam, and also became aware that her parents and others were relentlessly searching for her. He ended up dumping her at a bus station, where she found help.

"I am angry and cannot accept what he did to me. ... I was raped and beaten!" said the lanky girl with shoulder-length black hair. The AP generally does not publish the names of sexual abuse victims.

The girl's case made headlines this month when she was expelled after she tried to return to school. Officials at the school reportedly claimed she had tarnished its image. She has since been reinstated, but she no longer wishes to attend due to the stigma she faces.

Education Minister Mohammad Nuh also came under fire after making remarks that not all girls who report such crimes are victims: "They do it for fun, and then the girl alleges that it's rape," he said. His response to the criticism was that it's difficult to prove whether sexual assault allegations are "real rapes."

The publicity surrounding the story encouraged the parents of five other missing girls to come forward this month, saying their daughters also were victimized by people they met on Facebook. Two more girls were freed from their captors in October and are now seeking counseling.

A man who posed as a photographer on Facebook was recently arrested and accused of kidnapping and raping three teenage girls. Authorities say he lured them into meeting him with him by promising to make them models, and then locked them in a house. Police found dozens of photos of naked girls on his camera and laptop.

Another case involved a 15-year-old girl from Bogor. She was recently rescued by police after being kidnapped by someone she met on Facebook and held at a restaurant, waiting for someone to move her to another town where she would be forced into prostitution.

In some incidents, the victims themselves ended up recruiting other young girls after being promised money or luxuries such as mobile phones or new clothes.

Police are trying to get a step ahead of the criminals. Detective Lt. Ruth Yeni Qomariah from the Children and Women's Protection unit in Surabaya said she posed as a teenager online and busted three men who used Facebook to kidnap and rape underage girls. She's searching for a fourth suspect.

"It has been getting worse as trafficking rings become more sophisticated and underage children are more easily targeted," she said.

The man who abducted the Depok girl has not been found, and it's unclear what happened to the five other girls held at the house where she was raped.

"I saw they were offered by my kidnapper to many guys," she said. "I don't know what happened. I don't want to remember it."

New Home Tuscaloosa AL - Homes in Tuscaloosa | Real Estate ...

Newly built homes may make up a relatively small part of our overall housing market, yet I think Tuscaloosa homeowners have to be encouraged by the trends we are seeing. This October, the National Association of Homebuilders reported that construction spending has turned up (?A Housing Recovery is Gathering Steam?) after its long slide. In August, the Commerce Department reported that overall sales have jumped 25% over the past twelve months. So far, so good.

Yet it?s still true that many observers (I?m one) think that these encouraging numbers would be a lot better if it were easier to finance home purchases?particularly for previously occupied homes. New homes have an advantage right now in this department. At a time when obtaining financing can be a stumbling block, there are several reasons why lenders may gravitate toward financing Tuscaloosa new homes.

Part of the momentum has to do with recent history. One of the main reasons for the rise in newly built home sales since 2010 has been the number of foreclosures on new homes. Many of these were built on spec, never lived in, then turned over to lenders when the original investors could no longer afford to support them. Since foreclosed homes are usually cheaper than normal sales, that lower price made it easier to gain financing approval.? Added to these is the number of non-distressed new homes whose financing is available directly through the builder.

Other factors make new homes simply easier to finance. From the lender?s point of view, new homes look like a slam dunk when it comes to safety and compliance issues: if they are on the market, they?ve passed the test. New homes in Tuscaloosa are usually more energy-efficient ? plus, they have been constructed with today?s buyers? preferences in mind.? No home should ever be purchased without standard inspections, but new homes can often avoid some additional inspections that might be ordered for older homes.? Too, Tuscaloosa new homes bypass heirloom health concerns like lead and asbestos ? trimming loan-processing complexity.

Lenders as well as buyers of new homes can plan on less capital being required downstream, after the purchase, to keep properties in top shape. That smaller maintenance load makes it easier for the new owners to meet their mortgage requirements, which translates into lowered risk for lenders. More immediately, if a previously owned home is in need of major repairs ? that cost can postpone or derail a loan closing.

It?s all part of why buying new homes in Tuscaloosa can be an attractive option ? whether you are a first timer or home-buying veteran.? But it?s only one of the many elements that go into purchasing a home.? Whenever you would like to discuss the tradeoffs available as the market picks up steam, I?m here anytime to go over all of your Tuscaloosa options.

Regional elections foretell turmoil in Italy

ROME (AP) ? Italy risks heading into political turmoil after a regional election showed a huge level of voter distrust in mainstream political parties, a result that could also rattle financial markets that have no small role in deciding the fate of the economically troubled nation.

A protest party candidate from a movement launched by a TV comic made a strong showing in Sicilian elections Sunday, a vote seen as a test of popular sentiment before nationwide polls in the spring to replace the government of Premier Mario Monti. The Sicily vote also was marked by sharply lower turnout, down to 47 percent of eligible voters from 67 percent in the 2008 regional elections.

The populist Five Star Movement garnered 18 percent of the vote ? not enough to win the governorship because other parties ran in alliances, but still making it the top vote-getting party and a force to be reckoned with. Movement leader Beppe Grillo attracted large audiences with his attacks on Monti's austerity policies and the seemingly endemic corruption among Italy's major political parties.

"Without doubt this result is not positive for market confidence and increases uncertainty ahead of the general election next spring," said an analysis by economists Chiara Corsa and Loredana Federico for UniCredit, Italy's largest bank.

Monti's government of technocrats imposed a painful austerity program and has started in on reforms that together have succeeded in bringing down Italy's borrowing costs, which had skyrocketed when his predecessor, media magnate Silvio Berlusconi, lost the confidence of markets that he could bring Italy's finances under control and balance the budget.

Italy's benchmark 10-year bond yield rose Monday after the release of the Sicilian election results ? from 4.85 percent to 4.94 percent, a sign that investors have become somewhat more cautious about the country's financial future. The bond yield edged back only marginally to 4.92 percent on Tuesday.

But Monti's term ends in the spring and he has ruled out running for premier, although he has left the door open for a second term if no party wins a clear majority and he is tapped to head another government. There has also been talk of Monti serving as finance minister in a government next year, a move that would also please Italy's eurozone partners.

Monti, speaking at a conference of the World Economic Forum in Rome on Tuesday, directed himself to Italy's political class as he sketched a picture underlining the virtue of unpopular ? but necessary ? policy.

"The really important thing is, we have done very unpleasant things, unpleasant things for the receivers and even unpleasant for the doers. The perception of what this government is doing is not fully good. But it is higher than that of any of the parties," Monti said.

"This is an important message for future governments: Do not believe that you cannot do the right policies, otherwise you risk your position in the future," he said.

A further unknown is Berlusconi's intentions. He had been supporting Monti's government and recently suggested he planned to retire from politics.

But the 76-year media magnate may have changed his mind after a court in Milan convicted him Friday of tax fraud. He attacked Monti, complained that Germany had too much control over Italy's economic decisions, and said he would stay in politics to reform the justice system.

Political analyst Massimo Franco, writing in the leading Corriere della Sera, said Italy is paying the price for Berlusconi's "sad decadence and his system of power." He also wrote that the Sicilian election result is a warning that the country risks becoming ungovernable.

HUNTSVILLE, TX (10/30/12) -- Childhood bullying can lead to long term health consequences, including general and mental health issues, behavioral problems, eating disorders, smoking, alcohol use, and homelessness, a study by the Crime Victims' Institute at Sam Houston State University found.

"What is apparent from these results is that bullying victimization that occurs early in life may have significant and substantial consequences for those victims later in life," said Leana Bouffard, Director of the Crime Victims' Institute. "Thus, the adverse health consequences of victimization are much more far-reaching than just immediate injury or trauma. Understanding these long term consequences is important to assessing the true toll of crime on its victims and on society as well as responding to victims more effectively."

The study, "The Long Term Health Consequences of Bullying Victimization," recommends investing in victim services and effective prevention programs, such as the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a school based initiative for violence prevention. Programs can help address the immediate trauma, both mental and physical, that victims experience. The full report can be found at http://www.crimevictimsinstitute.org/publications/.

"This type of investment may also have the added benefit of reducing the long-term deleterious effects identified in this and other studies, thus reducing the high cost of victimization born by the victims themselves, the health care system and society in general," Bouffard said.

The current study is based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, a long term study that tracks a sample of U.S. residents born between 1980 and 1984. Nineteen percent of those surveyed said they had been a victim of repeated bullying.

The study found that those bullying victims had more negative perceptions of their general health and mental health and higher rates of emotional/mental or behavioral problems that interfered with school or work. They were also more likely to have an eating disorder, smoke, consume alcohol, experience subsequent violent victimization, or be homeless.

"While these are adverse consequences themselves, they may also serve as intermediate mechanism for even more long-term health issues, such as cancer, alcoholism, depression and other serious problems," said Maria Koeppel, co-author of the study.

###

The briefing paper is a summary of research which will be published in a special issue of Justice Quarterly that looks at issues in criminology and criminal justice from a public health perspective. The Crime Victims' Institute was created by the Texas Legislature to improve services to victims, conduct research to examine the impact of crime, give a voice to victims, and inform policymaking on victim related issues.

Sheepdog breed put on watch list

The iconic Old English Sheepdog is being hit by the growing popularity of so-called "handbag dogs" such as chihuahuas, the UK Kennel Club says.

New figures show there were just 316 puppy registrations for the breed so far this year.

A breed is deemed "vulnerable" if registrations drop below 300.

The sheepdog is one of a number of native breeds that are experiencing declines due to the fashion for the chihuahua, pug and Siberian Husky.

It was popularised by the television adverts for Dulux paint in the 1980s and 1990s.

There are thirty vulnerable breeds in total and four on the At Watch list.

Among the most vulnerable breeds are the Field Spaniel with 31 registrations so far this year, the Cesky Terrier with just 25 and the Skye Terrier, with 24.

By contrast, there were 28,787 Labrador Retriever puppies registered last year, making it the UK's most popular dog. There were 2,669 Chihuahuas and 5,496 Pugs registered - both breeds are growing rapidly in popularity.

Bill Lambert, manager of the Kennel Club Assured Breeder Scheme, said the decline in the Old English sheepdog could be partly explained by lifestyle changes.

"It needs a lot of grooming and exercise and so is not suitable for the fast paced urban lifestyles of many people," he explained.

"But it is also a lot to do with fashion. Despite the fact that Old English Sheepdogs have good temperaments and can make fantastic family pets their popularity is being eclipsed by more fashionable foreign breeds that can be much harder to train and care for.

"Of particular concern is the growth in popularity of the Siberian Husky, a beautiful dog which is notoriously willful and generally unsuitable for urban life."

The figures come from Kennel Club statistics for the first three quarters of this year.

Some native vulnerable breeds have fared well, with the Norwich Terrier seeing the largest increase in numbers in the first three quarters of this year, compared with the same period in 2011. It increased by 96%, from 108 to 202 registrations. The Otterhound has also increased by 57%, from 21 registrations to 33.

The organisation's annual event Discover Dogs is taking place in London on 10 and 11 November, featuring some of the most vulnerable breeds.

Sandy slows nuclear plants, oldest declares alert

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy slowed or shut a half-dozen U.S. nuclear power plants, while the nation's oldest facility declared a rare "alert" after the record storm surge pushed flood waters high enough to endanger a key cooling system.

Exelon Corp's 43-year-old New Jersey Oyster Creek plant remains on "alert" status, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said early Tuesday. It is only the third time this year that the second-lowest of four emergency action levels was triggered.

The alert came after water levels at the plant rose by more than 6.5 feet above normal, potentially affecting the "water intake structure" that pumps cooling water through the plant, an NRC spokesman said.

Those pumps are not essential since the reactor has been shut for planned refueling since October 22.

"Some of these reporting requirements are due though to the severity of the storms. That they have to make these notifications based upon conditions, that does not mean that they are in an imminent threat at the plant," Fugate said.

The incident at Oyster Creek, which is about 60 miles east of Philadelphia on the New Jersey Coast, came as Sandy made landfall as the largest Atlantic storm ever, bringing up to 90 mile per hour (mph) winds and 13-foot storm surges in the biggest test of the industry's emergency preparedness since the Fukushima disaster in Japan a year and a half ago.

Despite the alert -- which is a serious but not catastrophic event that signals a "potential substantial degradation in the level of safety" -- the U.S. nuclear industry was broadly seen having passed the test. About a dozen alerts have been issued in the past four years, according to NRC press releases.

On Tuesday morning, the NRC said that Entergy Corp's Indian Point 3 automatically tripped offline at about 10:41 p.m. last night due to fluctuations in the power grid caused by the storm, while Public Service Enterprise Group Inc's Salem Unit 1 was manually shut down at 1:10 a.m. due to a loss of "condenser circulators" due to the storm surge and debris.

SPENT FUEL

The relatively small 636-megawatt (MW) Oyster Creek plant earlier experienced a "power disruption" at its switch yard, causing two backup diesel generators to kick in and maintain a stable source of power, Exelon said.

The NRC spokesman said the company could use water from a fire suppression system to cool the pool if necessary. The used uranium rods in the pool could cause the water to boil in about 25 hours without additional coolant; in an extreme scenario the rods could overheat, risking the eventual release of radiation.

The concerns over the status of the spent fuel pool at Oyster Creek was reminiscent of the fears that followed the Fukushima disaster last year, when helicopters and fire hoses were enlisted to ensure the pools remained filled with fresh, cool water. The nuclear industry has said that the spent fuel rods at Fukushima were never exposed to the air.

Nuclear plants must store the spent uranium fuel rods for at least five years in order to cool them sufficiently before they can be moved to dry cask storage containers.

Exelon spokesman David Tillman said Monday night the plant has "multiple and redundant" sources of cooling for the spent fuel pool. He said he did not know whether the service water system was operational last night.

The plant uses pumps to take in external water that circulates through a heat exchanger used to cool the internal water that surrounds the rods, keeping them from overheating.

Among other units, Constellation Energy Nuclear Group's 630-MW Nine Mile Point 1 nuclear power reactor in upstate New York did shut due to a problem putting power onto the grid, although it was not clear whether the trouble was related to the storm.

In addition, Sandy caused power reductions at both units at Exelon's Limerick nuclear plant in Pennsylvania and one unit at Dominion's Millstone plant in Connecticut.

Top 5 Tips on Online Security for SMBs in Get Safe Online Week ...

by Sarah-Louise Burns, Maildistiller

As I ponder Get Safe Online Week it seems like a good time to share my top five tips on how businesses can be safer online?

1. Cover all Bases
At the very least, implement an anti-virus protection and conduct regular scans to maintain system security. If employees bring their own devices into the office or access the office network from home or access their work emails on their smartphones make sure these devices are protected too to avoid leaving your system open to threats.

2. Educate Employees on Safe Passwords
This year alone, nothing has been more evident than the need to use strong, unique passwords. Big names in the industry such as Yahoo, LinkedIn, Dropbox and Gamingo have all experienced security breaches making it clear that there is a need to educate employees on the subject.

3. Don?t assume that because you?re a small business you won?t be targeted by cybercriminals?
Small businesses are often targeted because they are less likely to have multiple defence resources to protect against threats. As a business, you are obligated to implement measures to protect customer information not to mention your own sensitive data such as financial records and intellectual property. If you handle this data, encryption is a necessary requirement for the storage and transmission of it.

4. Make it Official
If you haven?t already, draw up an internet security policy for employees to manage threats, encompassing the use of social media activity, USB sticks, own devices and so on. Additionally, this policy should include plans and procedures that would come into effect in the event of a security breach and how this will be dealt with.

5. Apply some Common Sense
Be suspicious of emails and their attachments as this is an easy way for hackers to be invited into your system. Some phishing emails are easy to spot because of grammatical errors but hackers are getting increasingly smart in their malicious activities. Your bank is not going to email you a password, ask you to login for updates or download an attachment. If I receive an email that I suspect I always search some of the details from the email and often if the email is not legitimate others will have received it too.

Sarah-Louise is a recent Graduate in Communication, Advertising and Marketing from the University of Ulster snapped up by Maildistiller, a leading Cloud? Email Security? vendor who began their venture as a small start-up in Belfast. Maildistiller now operate in over 23 countries worldwide.

Winter Driving Safety ? Surviving Motherhood

I thought with all the talk of SNOW possibly on Halloween and with what was happening off the coast (prayers going to them!), this was a great time for this post. STAY SAFE!!!

It?s that time of year again. We?re dusting off our woolly hats, digging out the wellies and braving the elements. Although we?d all like to be tucked up in bed with a cup of hot cocoa, there are times when we just can?t avoid taking the car out. UK-based company, Pass Smart, have created a guide to driving safely this winter. From what to keep in your boot, to advice for driving in snow, this guide includes everything you need to know to keep you and the littles ones safe this winter.

Checking your car!

Making sure your car is in tip-top condition is the very first thing to do as winter approaches. If you?re not sure what to look for, ask a family member or friend to have a look for you. You?ll need to check:

Headlights and tail lights are working

All tires (including the spare) are in good condition, with enough tread and pressure

The brakes are working well

The screen-wash bottle is full

Other fluids, such as oil and anti-freeze, are topped up to the correct levels

Be prepared

During the winter months, when adverse weather is on the cards, you should always have an emergency kit in your boot. It?s recommended that you have:

A tow rope

A flashlight

A shovel (you can buy compact, foldable shovels to preserve space)

High visibility vests

A blanket

First aid kit

De-icer and scraper

Warm clothes

Food & drink supplies, such as water (in a flask to prevent it from freezing) and some non-perishable food

You should also make sure that you take supplies for the kids when going out with them in the car. Some cereal bars, baby milk and jars of baby food are a god idea. Unless it?s essential they come with you, however, don?t travel ? in particularly bad weather ? with the kids in the car.

Plan your journey

Plan your route before you set off. Taking main roads is the safest option, as they?re more likely to have been gritted. If you can avoid treacherous roads, do so, even if it makes your journey longer.

Check local weather and road reports so that you know what to expect, and only drive if absolutely necessary.

It?s a good idea to tell someone what time you expect to reach your destination. Tell them you?ll ring them when you get there, or if you?re visiting someone, give them an estimated time of arrival. Make sure your phone is fully charged, so you can pull over and give them a call if you?re late.

Driving in snow and ice

When driving in snow and ice, making gentle maneuvers is vital. Stopping distance is increased by up to ten times in ice and snow, so drive slowly and don?t do any harsh braking. If your car starts to skid when braking, take your foot off the brake. Continuing to brake will only make the skid worse.

In an automatic vehicle, lock the transmission into 2nd gear, making you less reliant on the brake and limiting your speed.

If you find yourself stuck in the snow, it?s time to get the shovel out! (I bet you thought you?d never use it). Put something ? an item of clothing or old floor mat ? in front of the front tyres for some grip, and try to pull away. If you?re stuck in a dangerous place, get the kids out of the car and stand well away from the vehicle. Call a recovery truck if you need to.

Most importantly, remember to stay alert, be prepared and avoid driving at all unless absolutely necessary. Keep you and the little ones safe this winter; wrap up, get cosy and enjoy the snow safely!

Navy commander sent home amid investigation

By Lea Sutton, NBCSanDiego.com

SAN DIEGO -- A local Navy commander is returning to his home port in Washington state midway through his deployment following an investigation into undisclosed allegations of inappropriate judgment, Navy officials confirmed.

The commander in question is Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette, commander of the San Diego-based USS Mobile Bay and two North Island-based helicopter squadrons that are deployed with the Stennis Strike Group.

The Stennis Strike Group entered the Middle East area of operations less than 10 days ago, but is now left without commanding officer Gauette.

Navy officials said the admiral is being sent home to Bremerton, Wash., pending an investigation, but officials are not saying exactly what the investigation or allegations entail.

However, the Navy said Gaouette is not being formally relieved of command.

Retired Navy Capt. Neal Zerbe ? who served for more than 20 years ? told NBC 7 that this type of move by the Navy is highly unusual.

?The particular commander being relieved, and you know translating that to just moving him back to a continental U.S. base while the investigation continues, is unlike anything I've ever seen before,? said Zerbe.

It's unusual for the Navy to replace a Strike Group Commander mid-deployment and Zerbe said it?s important to note how the Navy?s statement about Gaouette is worded.

"If there are improprieties or if there are bad errors in judgment for something that happened in an operational situation -- you usually see wording to that effect," added Zerbe.

More from NBCSanDiego.com: 5K Honors Slain SDPD Officer

?The Stennis Strike Group deployed in late August and made two port visits on its way to the Middle East. Zerbe said that leadership is important, but he has full confidence the Strike Group will carry out its mission ? no matter what.

"This is at a very senior level. The guys that are delivering the bombs on target and supporting the guys in the field in contact, they're ready to go. They've got no issues; it's transparent at their level," he said.

An admiral who commanded the Abraham Lincoln Strike Group will assume command until the matter regarding Gaouette is resolved. Gaouette's chief of staff will be leading the Strike Group until his arrival.

Windows Phone 8 Shines on the HTC 8X [REVIEW]

Inspired by a Live Tile

HTC has said that the 8X was inspired by the Windows Phone Start Screen, and is designed to look like a live tile if a tile was a physical thing.

With that thought in mind, the phone will be available in a number of different colors ? Flame Red, California Blue, Limelight Yellow and Graphite Black ? colors that match some of the tile color options available in Windows Phone 8.

The HTC Windows Phone 8X is the ?signature handset? of Windows Phone 8, the product of the company?s partnership with Microsoft for the newest version of its mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8. Announced last month, the phone is set to make its way to AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon by the end of the year.

One of the first phones to hit the market running Windows Phone 8, and the first phone to hit Mashable?s office running the new OS, the handset will help set the tone for Windows Phone 8 in the mobile marketplace.

We had the opportunity to spend a few days with phone and found that there?s a lot to love about Windows Phone 8 and the HTC 8X.

Design

HTC has said the 8X was inspired by the Windows Phone Start Screen, and is designed to look like one of Windows Phone's animated "live tiles" if a tile was a physical thing.

With that thought in mind, the phone will be available in a number of different colors -? Flame Red, California Blue, Limelight Yellow and Graphite Black -? colors that match some of the tile color options available in Windows Phone 8.

At first glance, the colored version of the phone looks reminiscent of Nokia?s flagship Windows Phones, the 900 and 920.

Made of polycarbonate, the phone has rounded corners and a curved back, making it easy to hold, and if fact is slightly reminiscent of what a tile might be like. Thinner than a lot of phones on the market, the 8X easily slips in and out of pockets, and at 4.6 ounces is light enough that it won?t weigh you down.

HTC sent us the graphite black version. While subdued on the exterior, the black really made the colors on the live tiles pop.

Customized for You

One of the standout features of Windows Phone is its Start Screen. Fully customizable, the screen is populated by individual tiles representing each app -- the same kind of experience you'll find in Microsoft's recently released Windows 8 operating system.

Meant as a quick access point for apps you use often rather than a storage place for all your apps, tiles can be dragged and arranged wherever you would like them to be on the screen.

Some tiles are ?live,? meaning the information displayed on them changes. So, a weather app might display the temperature outside with a picture of, say, a raincloud if it's raining. A sports app may show the score in the game your favorite team is playing in.

As the user, you decide which apps earn their own tile space on your home screen, how big they are, and where those tiles are located.

The tile design was present in Windows Phone 7, but with Windows Phone 8 Microsoft has expanded on the interface, giving users the ability to not only customize the color of the tiles on the screen, but also the size of those tiles.

Now available in three different sizes, you can adjust tile size by pressing and holding a particular tile on the screen and then taping on an arrow that appears on the bottom of that tile.

The lock screen on the phone can be customized with a picture form your photo library, a built-in image or an image from Bing. Windows Phone 8 also allows you to display information from apps on your lock screen. For instance, your Facebook account can also provide the palette for the lock screen on the phone, pulling photos from your Facebook account -- either as a whole or specific albums that you specify.

I chose to have the lock screen pull from the photos I have uploaded to Instagram as well as my mobile uploads to Facebook. The result was a pretty interesting rotation of some of my favorite recent pictures that changed almost every time I picked up the phone.

Kids Corner is Smart

There are quite a few educational apps out there designed for kids of all ages that can be wonderful educational tools as well as fun and engaging.

Handing junior your smartphone to use those apps, however, can often be an intimidating proposition. What if he accidentally calls 911? What if he starts texting everyone in my address book?

Kid?s Corner is Windows Phone 8?s solution to that problem, creating a special little corner of your phone for your kid?s apps. Customizable just like the phone?s home screen with colored tiles and tile sizes, Kids Corner offers a safe place for your kids to use apps without giving him or her access to your entire phone.

Children can navigate between different apps you have chosen to include in the section, but are not able to get to anything else on the phone you haven?t specifically added to the section or the phone?s settings menu.

Performance

With Windows Phone 8, Microsoft added support for multiple-core processors, and the 8X takes advantage of that support rocking a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4.

The processor allows Windows Phone 8 to run smoothly on the phone. The Home Screen experience ran well even when loaded with live apps, and apps were able to launch very quickly.

HTC also added Beats audio to the 8X, a feature that can be turned on and off, which pumps up the bass on tunes you listen to, improving the listening experience no matter what headphones you happen to be using to rock out.

Display

The HTC Windows Phone 8X has a 4.3-inch 720p Super LCD 2 display, a new screen resolution supported in Windows Phone 8 which allows phones running the operating system to have higher-resolution screen than were previously possible.

In most settings the screen looks great. However, in sunlight it was a letdown. The screen had quite a bit of glare was difficult to view from any angle but straight on while the sun was shining on it.

For instance, I tried to snap a few shots of the phone on my dining room table, which happens to be right beside a window in my apartment. The scene has served for many a previous cellphone-review shot, but pictures I took of the 8X?s screen made the tile colors look washed out, and the screen as a whole was difficult to see to a point I had to change locations in order to take the fancy header picture you see at the top of the page.

The 8X is certainly not the first smartphone out there to have a tough time in sunlight, but the difficulty is definitely worth noting.

Camera

The 8X has a 2.1-megapixel/1080p forward-facing camera with a f/2.0 aperture for taking self-portraits and video chatting. While 2 megapixels isn?t an exceptionally high resolution, it is fairly high for a forward-facing camera on a smartphone. Awkward self-portraits I took with the camera looked great, and video looked crisp and clear with friends I video-chatted with.

The 8X has a dedicated shutter button for the camera, which I love, and wish was more of a standard on smartphones. What that means is you can hold the phone in landscape mode and push down on a button on the top of the phone to take a picture, just like you might on a point-and-shoot camera, rather than pressing on the screen.

Tapping on the shutter button instantly opens the camera app so you can start shooting, a speedy process that makes on-the-fly pictures a much easier experience than typically possible with many other smartphones.

The built-in rear-facing camera in HTC?s One line of smartphones is one of the best out there; an experience I had hoped was replicated with the 8X. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed in the camera experience on the 8X.

The 8-megapixel rear-facing camera often had trouble focusing on my subject when taking shots, and when I did focus on something by tapping on the screen that focus would often disappear before or while I was pressing the shutter button. The result is, well, a lot of blurry photos.

Images taken in brightly lit settings with a steady hand, such as in grocery store on my street, look great. After the San Francisco Giants won the World Series I took the phone out on the street to try and capture the scene outside. However, I ended up with more blurry indistinguishable photos than photos of the celebration I might want to put on Facebook. That said, the phone performed great in low-light situations, exposure-wise, and the low-light video I recorded of celebrators was notably better than video recorded of the exact same scene using an iPhone. The 8X also blew the iPhone out of the water quality-wise for the night photos at did capture.

Conclusion

The HTC Windows Phone 8X is set to go head-to-head against Nokia?s Lumia 920 and Samsung?s ATIV S in the Windows Phone marketplace.

Windows Phone 8 shines on the 8X and the phone is a pleasure to both hold and carry around. It will be interesting to see how the handset stacks up against the competition as additional Windows Phone 8 handsets are released in the coming weeks.
